Content is King

We have said it before, and we will keep saying it. On the internet Content is King. Nothing will affect your search engine rankings more than the content of your online shop / website.

Search engines want to return the best results to their users, so if someone is searching for remote controlled car (for example) it will scan its index to find what it thinks is the best site. This is based on several factors such as how popular the site is, how many sites link to it and most of all if the content on it matches what youre searching for.

If you wanted your site to come up for remote controlled car (for example) you would need to ensure your site actually has some content about remote controlled cars, if all you have are a few lines of text then you can forget it.

When a search engine (such as Google) comes to index your site it strips away all the images and all the HTML code and just looks at the content of your site in plain text format, so for example one of your products pages might go from...

Subaru Impreza Remote Controlled Car Subaru Impreza Remote Controlled Car

Has a top speed of 20 miles per hour and runs on li-ion batteries. Comes complete with remote control and battery charger.

... to this ...

This description text is what makes up our products page and so contained within it should be plenty of keywords that we would like to appear in the search engines for.

In this example we want to appear for the keywords remote controlled car and Subaru Impreza so we need to ensure our page has a keyword density of around 10-15% so that means that around 15% of all the words on this page should be keywords. So we can rewrite the description to something more search engine friendly such as

Subaru Impreza Remote Controlled Car Subaru Impreza Remote Controlled Car

This is a great remote controlled car for all ages, it features high speed thrills and is robust enough for even the toughest remote controlled car antics.

This is a 1:16th replica based on the Subaru Impreza rally car.

Here are some of this cars features
  • Top speed of 20 miles per hour
  • Powered by li-ion batteries.
  • Comes complete with remote control and battery charger.

... which would be displayed to the search engines as ...

As you can see we now have many more keywords in this text which means its much better for the search engines, and its also much better for customers as they have more information about the product. However this was just for an example and you could easily increase this to double the content.

Be careful however not to just fill your pages with keywords. If more than 15% of all the content on a page is keywords then your page will get a negative effect and its page rank within the search engines may fall.

Just as important as the content of your pages is the title of your pages and the alt text for your images. The alt text is what is shown if you have images turned off (as the search engines effectively do). You can see the alt text for most images by holding the mouse over the image for a few seconds. If you have images on your site that do not have any alt text then you need to add descriptive text to it.

The pages title is probably the most important part of any webpage as it defines what the page is about, so if the page is about a Subaru Impreza Remote Controlled Car then the title of the page should reflect this and should be Subaru Impreza Remote Controlled Car for example.

ekmPowershop automatically tries to ensure all the pages within your online shop are as search engine friendly as possible, it will automatically set the title of the pages to reflect the product or category thats on it and it will also give all the images correct alt text.

Although it can be hard to elaborate about some products it really is worth the effort as you will see the return through your search engine rankings. Nothing comes close to content for giving you good search engine rankings.

Any other method for cheating the search engines will eventually be found out. For example a trick of a lot of search engine optimisation companies over the past year or so is to create several pages that all link to each other and are stuffed full of keywords, however this method is simply cheating the search engines and so once they find your site is doing this you will be banned (and will probably be a few hundred pounds worse off).

Try searching in Google for one of your products and see what comes up, look for the first ecommerce site in the list and view it. Look at their descriptions; you can pretty much guarantee that they will be detailed descriptions with plenty of content. Your products descriptions need to be better than these if you are to ever overtake them in the rankings.

So remember, Content is King!
