Taking Photos for your ecommerce site

Successful online shop owners know that better product photos mean more sales, as everyone wants to see what they are buying and the more professional you present your products the more likely you are to obtain sales. The more buyers can see, the more likely they will buy your product rather than your competitors.

Photoshoot

Here are some tricks to improve the photos on your online shop...
  1. Use a good quality digital camera, don't try and get away with a cheap poor quality camera or mobile phone camera. A good quality camera will give you much better results.

  2. Use a tripod to avoid blurry images which can occur when you handhold a camera.

  3. Use proper lighting. Some people find natural outdoor lighting to be the best. It's worth trying to avoid direct lighting such as a flash as they can wash out colours, details, and create harsh shadows, especially when doing close-ups. Use soft, diffused lighting to avoid losing detail in your photo and create soft shadows. Consider buying a photo tent or light box to diffuse the light for you.

  4. Find a good clean backdrop for your product and avoid clutter which could distract the eye. Your product should be the only item you're shooting. Its a good idea to get the background colour of your images to match that of your website so they fit in nicely.

  5. Getting close and filling the frame with your product will produce a better photo, and also help avoid clutter. Buyers like to see the details of what they are buying so it's worth taking a few shots of each product and uploading them to your shop. We recommend one overall shot and then another 2 to 3 close up / different angle shots.

  6. Take photos of different parts of your product and try different angles. Photographing your product from many angles helps add depth and avoids a flat online appearance.

  7. If your selling clothes get a model or mannequin as it is very hard to portray clothing without it fitting around a body.

  8. Once you have taken your photos you need to transfer them to your computer and optimise them for usage on the internet. Save you images as JPEG files and increase the compression so that your images will download quicker. Also crop your photos so that it is composed only of your product, eliminating white space and making your product look better.

You should also reduce the dimensions of the image as many digital cameras will take photos which will be several thousands of pixels wide. You should try and reduce the width and height of the image to around 500 pixels at the maximum.
With ekmPowershop each of your products can have up to 5 main photographs and through the description editor you can add as many further pictures as you like, and so it's worth taking full advantage of these features.
